Green smoothie is a great way to reset! Whether you’re trying to eat healthier, get more fruits and veggies in, or simply look for a refreshing and hydrating smoothie, there is sure a good reason for you to make this detox smoothie. It’s quick to prepare and loaded with natural fruits and veggies. Bonus: this green detox smoothie is deliciously sweet and as surprising as it gets, it doesn’t taste vegetables!
What is a green detox smoothie?
As you may know, I’m not the kind of person who promotes any kind of diet (I believe this is a personal matter, an only you knows what’s best for you). So before we go further, let’s get straight to the point: despite the name, this green detox smoothie is NOT related to any kind of diet, nor do I recommend it. In fact, there is no scientific evidence behind the fact that cleanses or detox diets provide any tangible benefits.
Instead, a green detox smoothie is a smoothie full of wholesome, natural ingredients, including a great dose of leafy greens (kale), known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxification properties. Together with some tropical fruits like mangoes, bananas, and coconut water, this smoothie is nutrient-rich, hydrating, and refreshing.
Why you’ll love this green detox smoothie
- A smooth and creamy texture with a sweet fruity flavor
- A great way to increase your fruit and veggie intake
- Nutrient-rich, hydrating and refreshing
Ingredients needed
- Kale. I recommend using baby kale over any other kind of kale (Tuscan kale or curly kale) for a sweeter and milder flavor. Alternatively, you can replace with baby spinach.
- Banana. It adds sweetness and creaminess to the smoothie.
- Frozen mango and pineapple. It provides a sweet, fruity flavor to the smoothie. Used frozen, it helps achieve the creamy texture of this green smoothie.
- Coconut water. It’s an essential part of the smoothie to achieve the smooth, creamy texture. Plus it’s packed with electrolytes and very hydrating.
- Spirulina powder (optional). You can use blue spirulina or green spirulina. Both have very similar properties.
What is spirulina? Spirulina is a sweet blue-green microalgae which is now known as a superfood, with a wide range of health benefits upon ingestion: it’s a great source of plant-based protein, it helps improve the immune system and is a natural detoxifier with powerful antioxidant properties.
Why using baby kale in this smoothie? Baby kale is a younger version of kale, harvested before it matures. As a result, it’s tender, with a sweet and mild flavor, making it perfect in a smoothie. Tuscan kale (with flat, dark green leaves) also works well, but if using curly kale, I recommend using less in this green smoothie as it has a slightly bitter flavor than the other two.
Tips to blend green detox smoothie
To make sure the greens really get broken down and you aren’t left with green flecks throughout your smoothie, start by blending the kale, banana and coconut water, until smooth (you can pulse a few times, and then blend). Then, add the frozen mango and pineapple chunks and blend on high until thick, smooth and perfectly creamy. Add the spirulina if using, blend, and enjoy!
Can I make it ahead of time?
Yes! You can prepare this green detox smoothie a day ahead and keep it in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Simply give it a shake or an additional blend before enjoying! You can also pour into an ice cube tray, flash-freeze, then store the cubes into a frozen-friendly ziploc bag. When ready to use, simply remove a few frozen smoothie cubes and blend in a high power blender.
Add-ins and variations
This green detox smoothie is delicious as is, but you can also mix it up for tasty additions. Here are a few suggestions that come to mind:
- Use baby spinach instead of baby kale. It’s often easier to find and works just as fine.
- Replace banana with avocado, especially if you don’t like banana flavor.
- Sweeten with a few pitted dates if desired.
- Add some chia seeds or flaxseeds for an extra boost of fiber (and protein for the chia seeds). Even hemp seeds work great!
My other favorite healthy drinks:
- Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie – My go-to, I’ve been making it at least once a week for more than 10 years now!
- Chocolate Almond Banana Smoothie – My #2 favorite smoothie, I make it very often too!
- Mango Smoothie Bowl – It makes a great healthy and nutritious breakfast bowl.
- Matcha Frappuccino – A fantastic matcha drink to enjoy anytime of the day!
